Our Protein
Radar Bar gets its protein from a combination of raw cashews, homemade peanut butter, dates, and egg white powder.
A 50 gram Radar Bar contains 15 grams of protein, which is 30% of the Recommended Dietary Alowance (RDA). 4.5 grams of that comes from a combination of raw cashews, homemade peanut butter, and dates. The remaining 10.5 grams comes from egg white powder.
What is egg white powder?
Egg white powder is dried egg whites. Most of an egg’s protein is found in the egg white – 3.6 grams of protein per egg white to be exact. We dry the egg whites slowly, then blend them into a fine powder.
So you’re probably wondering, why not just use regular egg whites?
Quite simply, it’s all about the shelf life of egg whites. Cooked eggs will last a few days before expiring, but in dried powder form, egg whites have a shelf life of 25 years! That means you can store your Radar Bar longer, and use it as per your own schedule to suit your busy days and workouts.
Is it the same as regular eggs?
Everything you’d get from a regular egg white is provided in egg white powder.
There are 20 amino acids that make up the protein in a human body. Our bodies can make 11 of them, but we can’t synthesize the other 9 – we have to get them from other sources like food. These 9 are “essential amino acids”, and you’ll get all 9 from egg white powder, just as you would from regular egg whites.
Not only that, but egg white powder has a PDCAAS* of 1.0 – the highest possible score – which means it is also bioavailable. So upon digestion, 100% of the 9 essential amino acids will make it to your body’s muscles.
It is very low in calories, contains 0mg of cholesterol, and provides the vitamins a regular egg white would.
*PDCAAS is a method of evaluating the quality of a protein based on human requirements and their ability to digest it.
How is it made?
Our egg white powder is made in house. We crack open fresh free-range eggs, and separate the white from the yolk. The raw liquid egg whites are then dried out very slowly at a low temperature – not high enough to cook them, but low enough to be pasteurised.
Finally, the dried out egg whites are blended into a fine powder, and stored in a cool, dry place to protect it from any moisture, before being added to the rest of the ingredients to make a Radar Bar.
It’s critical that the liquid egg whites are heat pasteurised to destroy any bacteria, such as salmonella, which may contaminate raw eggs. Our method of heat pasteurising eliminates all bacteria, making our egg white powder perfectly safe for consumption.
